Talking With John Sprigg

How did you end up working in the financial services industry?

As I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up, at age 16 I started work at Britannic Assurance PLC as the office gofer and the rest, as they say, is history! After 31 years in the industry, I’m hoping for promotion from office gofer soon…..

You joined Prosser Knowles in August as Compliance Manager, could you tell us a bit about what your role entails?

My role is about ensuring that we continue to act in the spirit of the rules set by the FCA and ensure positive outcomes for our clients. I try to be approachable for the advisers and wherever possible provide practical solutions to the many compliance related issues and queries that arise. As you will see from my answers, responding in compliance waffle is also a key part of my role!

What led you to start working at Prosser Knowles?

I had worked with Prosser Knowles on a professional basis for several years providing support to their compliance function. When their previous Compliance Manager retired the opportunity arose for me to take this challenging role on. Having worked with them, they were an ideal choice for my career as I was aware of the excellent client focused culture and environment they operate in.

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

I really enjoy working with the advisers and entire team in a pro-active way to support the positive outcomes for the end consumer.

What challenges do you face?

There are many regulatory changes that challenge the industry regularly. I find that reacting to them, and ensuring we can adhere to them in the most effective way with the resources available, proves challenging at times but at Prosser Knowles we always like to stay ahead of the game and be ready well in advance of any changes that are due to take effect.

Do you have a role model?

An old boss of mine gave the best quote which was to treat people as you would expect to be treated yourself. I always endeavour to abide by this value.

How do you choose to relax?

I try to keep fit with walking and visits to the gym. I also enjoy watching films and TV and spending time with my family.
